Dear MABBY,

My son just got his March SAT scores and we’re not sure what to make of them. It looks like he got 550 twice so I’m wondering if the College Board made a mistake. I have a few questions: How do I know if his scores are good enough for Harvard? Is it bad if they’re only two digits in a particular category? What about the ACT? What’s the essay out of? What’s a perfect score? How close is he to a perfect score? Does Harvard take everyone with a perfect score? If he didn’t do well, can I substitute his PSAT score?

Thanks in advance for your detailed responses.

Dear Quincy,

It’s a good thing that you only had a few questions because I’m not sure if I have time to answer more today.
